 dentist and orthodontist

A dentist assesses, diagnoses and treats diseases and conditions in the mouth. They may also monitor the soft tissues of the face, checking for any abnormalities.  They will offer guidance on the prevention of cavities and how to maintain good oral hygiene at home.

An orthodontist is initially trained as a dentist but has then gone onto specialise in orthodontics.  An orthodontist, like those you'll find at Northenden House, treat irregularities in relation to your teeth and jaw.

The frequency of your appointments with your dentist or your orthodontist depends what you are attending for.  A general dental examination can be carried out at varying frequency intervals depending upon your oral health, how prone you are to developing caries and whether your dentist is monitoring anything in your mouth or your soft tissues.

Generally, the perception is that you are to have your dental examination every 6 months however intervals can vary between 3-24 months. Whilst having orthodontic treatment it is vital you maintain your scheduled dental examination with your dentist.

If your orthodontic practitioner notes a concern at one of your appointments they will contact your general dentist to discuss the management of the problem. Your orthodontic practitioner will see you frequently during the active phase of your course of treatment. The frequency will depend upon the type of appliance you have had fitted, this will be discussed when you are consented for your specific treatment plan. Following the active phase of treatment, your orthodontic practitioner will monitor your retention phase for 1 year, you will generally have 2 appointments during this period. However if you note a problem with your retainer then a review appointment can be arranged.

Your dentist and orthodontist will work hand in hand to ensure the best treatment result is achieved, at any point along your treatment journey you have a query, don’t hesitate to contact either of your practitioners.
