Foods to avoid to keep your smile looking bright

We’ve listed a whole bunch of foods and beverages that stain teeth:

  • Tea
  • You might be thinking: “I thought it was coffee that stains teeth?” But according to our top Dentists, tea (although a healthy drink) can wear away the enamel of your teeth and cause stains.

  • Sauces
  • Deeply coloured sauces - think soy, tomato, and curry sauces - can also cause stains. Try switching from these to more light-coloured or creamy sauces. I know, we’re sad about this one too.

  • Sports drinks
  • Do you know what can also affect your teeth? Acidic foods and drinks, like sports drinks or energy drinks. They can erode enamel, making them more susceptible to stains. So try drinking water at your next work-out.

  • Wine
  • Anything that can stain a tablecloth, will stain your teeth too. Now, it’s no surprise that red wine can discolour teeth. But white wine can too as it’s acidity can wear down enamel making your teeth more prone to discolouration later on.

  • Fruits and berries
  • Another food that can stain your teeth? Any vibrant fruits including berries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, and pomegranates. And we’re sorry to disappoint, but juices and pies made from them can also cause stains.

  • Fizzy drinks
  • Now fizzy drinks, like Cola and Fanta, are bad for various health reasons. Not only can the dyes and acids stain your teeth, but they can also eat away at your tooth enamel which may lead to problems further down the line.

  • Sweets
  • Ever think it’s cool how your tongue changes colour when you eat your favourite sweets? Well, it’s probably staining your teeth too. The staining related to sweets may not be permanent but the sugar content in them is extremely high and may cause cavities further down the line.
