3 Easy Steps for white teeth while wearing braces

brushing teeth with braces

Are you planning to start brace treatment soon? Or maybe your treatment is coming to an end and you’re scared of stained teeth?

We know for some people that stained teeth after braces is a huge cause for concern, but we have tips to help you achieve the smile you’ve always dreamed of… And one without the stains!

But before we start, we’d like to disclose that braces themselves don’t stain your teeth as braces are made of high-grade materials that don’t rust or cause discolouration.

The usual cause of yellowing is the build-up of plaque and food particles behind braces and in the gaps of your teeth.

At Northenden House Orthodontics, we are here to help you navigate your life with braces with 3 easy steps to keep your teeth white and your oral hygiene at its best!

  1. Brush Your Teeth Thoroughly

Your mouth is home to over 700 types of bacteria, so if you don’t brush properly it can cause some serious problems. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day can minimise plaque build-up and bacteria that cause the teeth to stain. Committing to oral hygiene habits not only prevents stains, but it can also have a good impact on your oral health.

  1. Avoid Foods that Stain

Other than plaque build-up, some foods can also actually stain your teeth. Here’s a list of food and drink you might want to ditch during brace treatment:

  • Tea and coffee
  • Red wine
  • Coca-Cola
  • Fruit juices
  • Tomato-based sauces
  • Curry
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Soy sauce
  • Berries
  • Beetroot

  1. Start flossing

Unfortunately, not enough people are flossing their teeth regularly. But flossing regularly can maximise the results from your smile transformation. It can also help to prevent gum disease and tooth decay and clean the areas where a regular toothbrush can’t reach. We recommend using interdental brushes to get into those hard to reach places.
